General resources for grad school and life
Graduate school is not easy. Life is not easy. Here are some of my favorite websites/things that have helped me through it all.
You can find my GRFP advice and statements here!
Graduate School:
- Connected papers: explore related articles via a cool visual graph
- Astrosites: make your own website through this tutorial
- While I was a big fan of paper to-do lists, a few fellow grads (hi Jen!) swore by using a Kanban Board!
- Toggl: easy time tracking to see where your time goes
- CV template on overleaf, forked from Dr. Ed Brown (MSU)
- UConn PhD Thesis Template, adapted from the thesis of Dr. H Perry Hatchfield
- Saving up for a nice pair of noise canceling headphones was a life-saver in those shared offices and on flights to conferences. Took a few paychecks, but was worth it.
Reading lists for being a responsible scientist, especially those that engage with machine learning and AI:
- Weapons of Math Destruction by Dr. Cathy O'Neil
- Race After Technology by Dr. Ruha Benjamin
- Automating Inequity by Dr. Virginia Eubanks
- Algorithms of Oppression by Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble
- Viral Justice by Dr. Ruha Benjamin
- This list is not exhaustive, please keep engaging with this material even when it makes you uncomfortable. Know of a book that should be here? Please let me know!
